Work to build the new St Stephen’s Community Hub in Coatbridge is making good progress and is on track to open later this year.

The new hub, being delivered as part of North Lanarkshire Council’s Town and Community Hub Programme, is designed to provide a modern, inclusive space that will serve pupils, families and the wider community for generations to come.

Council Leader Jim Logue and Councillor Michael McBride, Convener of Education, Children and Families visited the site to meet the team working on the site and see how construction works are progressing on the £34 million facility.

Construction is progressing well on the landmark development, with the steel frame now in place, alongside major roof works and external brickwork. Internal partitions are also advancing steadily, bringing the vision for the new learning and community environment to life.

The project is on target, with handover of the new community hub planned for late 2026.

Councillor Jim Logue said: “It’s fantastic to see the scale of progress being made at St Stephen’s. This development represents a major investment in the future: the new hub will not only provide first-class learning facilities but will also create a vibrant space for the wider community.”

St Stephen’s Community Hub has been designed to ensure that each new development serves the whole community and encourages a strong sense of local ownership.

Councillor Michael McBride added: “Projects like this are about much more than bricks and mortar. They’re about opportunity, inclusion and creating a shared community asset that everyone can be proud of. Seeing the steel frame and structure now in place really shows how quickly this is moving forward.”

Once complete, the hub will provide state-of-the-art educational facilities alongside flexible spaces that can be used by community groups and partners, supporting collaboration and improving access to local services.

When St Stephen’s pupils move into their new home, the former Sikeside Primary School building will be demolished to make way for additional car parking.

The project is one of four major construction projects taking place in North Lanarkshire under the town and community hub development programme. Others include Gartcosh Community Hub, St Kevin’s Community hub and an extension to Chryston High School.

In addition, the construction programme is delivering tangible community benefits. Across hub projects, commitments have been made to create local jobs, apprenticeships, work placements and training opportunities for young people.

Pupils from local schools, such as St Andrews High School are also benefiting from careers events and site visits designed to inspire them to consider careers in construction and related industries.
