Our incentive to downsize scheme is continuing to support tenants who want to move to a home that better suits their needs, while also freeing up larger properties for families on the housing waiting list.
Currently, there are more than 14,000 households waiting for a council home in North Lanarkshire, while around 3,200 properties are classed as under-occupied. The scheme helps tackle this challenge by encouraging tenants in three-bedroom or larger homes to consider moving to a smaller property.
Downsizing can bring real benefits, saving money on rent, council tax, and fuel bills, while also making a home easier to maintain.
To make the move easier, tenants can now access a £3,500 package of support towards moving costs, along with additional housing allocation points for every under-occupied bedroom.
Councillor Michael McPake, Convener of Housing, said: “This scheme is all about choice and support. For some tenants, downsizing can make life easier and reduce costs, while at the same time helping another family move into a bigger home they urgently need.
“With thousands of households on our waiting list, every under-occupied property that becomes available makes a real difference. There is no obligation for people to move, but we are here to help make sure anyone considering the move has all the help and reassurance they need.”
The scheme also offers practical support and advice from housing staff to help make the moving process as smooth as possible.
