Council tackling increasing problem of graffiti

We are setting up a multi-agency group to address the increasing problem of graffiti.

Council teams working in communities routinely identify and report incidents of graffiti to the specialist crews who will then clean up the mess from council-owned property.

In 2025, the number of incidents reported was 1,164. In the first three months of 2026, the figure was 310 and anecdotal evidence from crews and members of the public indicates a significant increase in incidents recently.

“We are seeing graffiti across communities on street signs and furniture, buildings, utility boxes and other property, often at the same locations our crews have just cleaned,” said Councillor Helen Loughran, Convener of the Environment and Climate Change Committee.

“It’s a real eyesore and contributes to public safety concerns for residents, as well as diverting council staff time and resources away from other essential maintenance tasks.

“The council will, of course, continue to remove the graffiti on its property, but this doesn’t address the antisocial behaviour of those responsible for the mess.

“Therefore, we intend to bring together staff from relevant council services, Police Scotland, public utility providers and community organisations to identify ways to tackle the problem, through a programme of enforcement and education.”

Residents can report graffiti on council-owned property to the council by phoning 0345 143 0015 or online at Graffiti and vandalism | North Lanarkshire Council. This web page includes information on how to report graffiti on public utility boxes.
