Pupils and staff at St Mary's Primary School have secured the prestigious Gold Rights Respecting Schools Award.
Over the past few years, St Mary’s has worked hard to embed the principles of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child into its curriculum, policies and wider activities. Pupils have taken an active role in leading assemblies, supporting charities and helping to shape school decisions.
Assessors praised the way children confidently speak about their rights and understand the importance of respecting the rights of others. They also highlighted the positive relationships across the school and the welcoming, inclusive ethos.
“We are absolutely delighted to achieve the Gold Rights Respecting Award. This recognition reflects the dedication of our pupils, staff and families in making sure children’s rights are understood and lived out every day at St Mary’s,” said Paula Brazill, Head Teacher of St Mary’s Primary School.
“Our children are passionate about fairness and equality. They show kindness and respect to one another and are proud to have a voice in their school. This award belongs to all of them.”
Alyssa McKay, a P4 pupil and active member of the RRS committee, added: "It’s important for us to learn about our Rights so that we can respect them and recognise when they are not being upheld.
“We learn about Rights in our classes, house meetings and assemblies. I’m proud to be part of the committee, and I know that our voices are listened to and respected at St Mary’s."
The award, presented by UNICEF UK, is the highest level of recognition for schools that place children’s rights at the heart of their values and daily life. It recognises the school’s strong commitment to promoting respect, fairness and pupil voice across the whole community.
Staff say they are committed to continuing this work and ensuring every child feels safe, valued and empowered to achieve their best.
