We are continuing to make strong progress in reducing homelessness and improving housing outcomes for individuals and families across our area.
Our latest Homelessness Action Plan update shows a 2% fall in homelessness applications and a 21% reduction in repeat homelessness during 2024–25. Importantly, there is no one sleeping rough in North Lanarkshire, thanks to an ongoing focus on prevention, support, and early intervention.
Over the past year, 370 new council homes were delivered, and 26 long-term empty properties were also brought back into use to provide more safe, permanent homes for local people. This work will continue to expand, supported by the introduction of a new Empty Homes Officer post.
Our efforts are particularly focused on supporting vulnerable residents, including young people, care-experienced individuals, and those affected by domestic abuse. Trauma-informed services, tenancy support, and targeted funding have all helped people sustain tenancies and rebuild stability in their lives.
Councillor Michael McPake, Convener of Housing, said: “This report highlights the real difference our teams are making every single day. Behind every statistic is a person or a family who now has a safe, secure home, and that’s what drives us. We’ve made real progress in reducing homelessness, preventing people from reaching crisis point, and ensuring that no one in North Lanarkshire has to sleep rough.
“Our staff have worked tirelessly to make this happen, showing compassion and commitment to those who need support most.”
Other highlights include:
- The Homes First service supported 73 people with complex needs into settled accommodation.
- The average time spent in temporary accommodation remains well below the national figure (136 days compared to Scotland’s 238-day average).
- Youth homelessness outcomes are strong, with 80% of young people securing a council tenancy.
- £1.5 million in acquisition funding was secured to buy back properties, reducing pressure on temporary accommodation.
The future focus will remain on prevention, expanding housing supply, and continuing to provide person-centred support to those who need it most.
