More than 50 local businesses attended our breakfast event to highlight the support available to help them grow.
The businesses have all achieved our Employer Charter Award, which recognises commitments by employers to: pay all staff the Real Living Wage; employ North Lanarkshire residents; use local businesses in the supply chain where possible; and ensure fair work practices which attract and retain employees.
Attendees heard from our business support team about the advice, funding incentives, and practical guidance available to local companies, from the employability team about the latest recruitment incentives and from the DYW/Pathways team, who highlighted opportunities to connect with local schools and inspire future talent through connecting pupils and businesses.
There was also a presentation from Employer Charter member Alan Kirkwood, Director of WH& R McCartney Insurance Brokers, about his business and the services he offers to other members.
“North Lanarkshire is full of ambitious, hard-working businesses, and the Employer Charter is a fantastic way to bring them together with practical support,” Alan said. “It was a privilege to share how strong risk management and smart insurance can help local employers protect what they’ve built and grow with confidence.”
“For small enterprises or large organisations, our Employer Charter accreditation offers real advantages to businesses,” said Councillor Alex McVey, Convener of the Enterprise and Fair Work Committee.
“This includes attracting local talent, elevating your business profile, enhancing your reputation and accessing support and exclusive networking events.
“We have a growing network of over 80 Employer Charter members, and the event held earlier this month will be one of a series of regular events to network, generate new opportunities and learn about the latest incentives designed to support and grow their businesses.”
The Charter is built around four practical pillars that support business goals while contributing to a fairer, more inclusive economy:

- Buy North Lanarkshire – Support local suppliers, deliver community benefits and social value through procurement where applicable.
- Be the Best – Offer flexible working, staff development, promote wellbeing and inclusion, and commit to equality and diversity.
Accreditation is free, with a straightforward application process and benefits include:
- Enhance Your Reputation – Build trust and credibility as a responsible employer.
- Attract and Retain Talent – Stand out as an employer of choice committed to fair work and development.
- Access Local Support – Tap into council-backed programmes for recruitment, training, and growth.
