Around 250 players from schools, community groups, friends and voluntary organisations took to the pitches at Ravenscraig on Wednesday 10 September for North and South Lanarkshire’s annual 7-a-side football tournament marking World Suicide Prevention Day.
The event wasn’t just about the football, the day was about raising awareness, tackling stigma, and reminding people that support is always available.
Provost Kenneth Duffy said: "Events like this show the power of community in tackling really difficult issues. Suicide affects far too many families across Lanarkshire, and days like today remind us that it’s okay to talk, it’s okay to ask for help, and that support is always there. I’d like to thank every single person who took part, you’ve helped spread a message of hope."
Stalls from SAMH, Kooth Mental Health Support, Scottish Fire and Rescue and YAMS (You Are My Sunshine Charity) were on hand throughout the day, offering advice and highlighting the importance of talking openly about mental health.
Councillor Louise Roarty, Depute Leader of North Lanarkshire Council, added: "Football is a brilliant way to bring people together, and today it’s done something even more important, it’s helped spark conversations about suicide and mental health. That’s how we break the stigma.
“A huge thanks to our partners, local schools and organisations for supporting the event, and to all the players who gave their energy and enthusiasm on the day. Everyone involved played their part in raising awareness and sharing the message that suicide is preventable, and that by supporting one another we can all help save lives.”
