Motherwell is set for a major boost as Forgewood, North Motherwell and the town centre neighbourhood will benefit from £20 million of funding and support over the next decade through the UK Government’s Pride in Place Programme.

This long-term investment will empower local people to shape the future of their communities, revitalise spaces, and create opportunities for growth.

Councillor Jim Logue, Leader of North Lanarkshire Council, welcomed the announcement: "This is a fantastic opportunity for Motherwell communities. The Pride in Place Programme will bring lasting benefits by empowering local people to shape the future of their neighbourhoods.

“It supports this council’s vision for vibrant, thriving towns and complements our current Local Outcome Improvement Plans.

“We look forward to working closely with residents and partners to ensure this funding delivers real change – improving spaces, boosting the local economy, and creating opportunities for everyone."

The Pride in Place Programme is a new government funding programme, aimed at regenerating some of the most in-need neighbourhoods across the UK.

A new Neighbourhood Board will be set up to agree the priorities for spending the funding which will be phased over 10 years.

The initial funding in 2026/27 earmarked for community engagement and capacity building to make sure the funding is spent on projects that will make a real difference to the neighbourhoods they live in.

The programme is:

  • Long-term: providing certainty and security of funding over 10 years.
  • Flexible: allowing communities to spend their funding on the projects that matter most to them, in a way that works for them.
  • Community-led: putting local people at the heart of decision-making, with residents able to have their say on the future of their neighbourhood.
  • Supportive: empowering people to build the skills and confidence they need to deliver change in their communities, through capacity funding and targeted support activities.
