Community invited to celebrate the legacy of Gartcosh Steel Works through stories, film and exhibition.
The "Your Heritage in Focus" project brings the history of the Gartcosh Cold Reduction Mill to life
Residents, former steelworkers, families, and local history enthusiasts are being invited to take part in a unique heritage celebration exploring the history and people of the Gartcosh Steel Works Cold Reduction Mill.
The Gartcosh Steel Works project focuses on the industrial heritage of the Mill the people whose lives and livelihoods were connected to it, and the story of Gartcosh village.
Delivered through the council's Your Heritage in Focus programme, the project aims to protect, preserve and promote the rich industrial heritage of North Lanarkshire by capturing the stories, memories and experiences of those connected to one of Scotland's most significant steelworking communities.
The programme begins with a Heritage Social on Saturday 12 September, from 2pm to 6pm at Gartcosh Works Social Club.
Visitors can enjoy screenings of evocative film footage of the mill alongside personal stories, recollections and anecdotes from those with first-hand experience of life and work at Gartcosh Steel Works. The drop-in event will feature a programme repeated hourly, with refreshments available throughout the afternoon.
The project continues with a public exhibition at Gartcosh Community Facility from Thursday 15 October to Sunday 18 October 2026.
Curated by local researcher John Carroll, the exhibition is the culmination of a year-long effort to collect photographs, stories and memories from former employees and their families. The exhibition will present a powerful portrait of the steelworks and the community whose lives were shaped by it.
John Carroll said: "Over the past year I have been collecting stories and images of the people, and their families, who worked at the Cold Reduction Mill at Gartcosh Steel Works. This exhibition is an opportunity to share these memories and celebrate the people who made the works such an important part of our community."
