Wishaw Academy Primary School has received the UNICEF UK Rights Respecting School Gold Award – the highest honour given to schools that show a strong commitment to children’s rights.
The Gold Award recognises schools that put the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child at the heart of everything they do – from planning and policies to everyday classroom life.
It means pupils are learning about their rights, practising them, and helping to create a respectful and inclusive school community.
The school began working with UNICEF UK in March 2022, earned its Silver Award in October 2023, and celebrated the Gold achievement at a special event in June.
Headteacher Michelle Beadie said: “At Wishaw Academy Primary, being a Rights Respecting School isn’t just a label – it’s a lived experience.
“We’re proud to foster a culture where every child knows their rights, feels valued, and is empowered to speak up and make a difference. This achievement reflects the unwavering commitment of our pupils, staff and wider community.”
Provost Kenneth Duffy praised the school’s achievement: “This is a fantastic accomplishment for Wishaw Academy Primary.
"The Gold Award shows how deeply the school values its pupils and their voices. It’s clear that children here are growing up in an environment where respect, inclusion and kindness are part of everyday life.”
Councillor Michael McBride, Convener of Education, Children and Families, added: “Congratulations to everyone at Wishaw Academy Primary for reaching this milestone.
“The Rights Respecting Schools programme helps children understand their rights and responsibilities, and it’s wonderful to see how the school has embraced this. It’s a credit to the staff, pupils and families who have worked together to make this happen.”
UNICEF UK’s assessor, Steven Kidd, noted in his report that pupils showed “excellent awareness of rights” and felt safe at school thanks to the support of teachers and staff.
The Rights Respecting Schools programme is used in nearly 5,000 schools across the UK, helping children feel more confident, improving behaviour and relationships, and supporting better learning outcomes.
