Motherwell will again host the North Lanarkshire Half Marathon next year, building on the enormous success of the inaugural event in 2025, which saw hundreds of runners, spectators and families take part in a celebration of community spirit, fitness and fun.

Elected members on the council’s Policy and Strategy Committee approved plans for the return next year, with plans to further grow participation and enhance the event experience.

This year's debut race welcomed 664 half-marathon runners, with local streets lined by cheering families and supporters. Alongside the main race, the day also featured 5K, 1K, 400m and toddler dash events, plus a free family fun zone enjoyed by hundreds of residents.

The event delivered not only a boost to physical wellbeing but also to the local economy. Cafés and shops saw increased footfall, with several businesses offering discounts to medal-wearing participants. Many runners travelled from across Scotland and beyond to take part, showcasing Motherwell as a destination for large-scale community sport.

Welcoming the latest announcement, Provost Kenneth Duffy said: “The success of this year’s Half Marathon showed exactly what makes North Lanarkshire special, people coming together, supporting one another and showing real pride in their community. Seeing hundreds of runners of all ages take to the streets and families enjoying the fun zone was brilliant.

“We’re excited to be bringing it back next year, and I’ve no doubt it will grow even bigger, better and brighter. It’s great for health, great for local businesses, and great for our spirit. The event forms part of our commitment to improving health, wellbeing and access to sport, and encouraging residents to get active, participate and celebrate their community.”

More details will be announced in the coming months.
