Hundreds of runners took to the streets of Motherwell for the inaugural North Lanarkshire Half Marathon, marking a successful start to what organisers hope will become an annual fixture in the local sporting calendar.

A total of 664 runners completed the half marathon with Christopher MacDonald finishing first with a time of 1 hour, 15 minutes and 50 seconds. Steven Fitzpatrick followed closely in second place at 1:16:18, with Adam Hart finishing third in 1:16:35.

Elaine Boyle led the women’s race, crossing the line in 1:31:28. Julie Beveridge came second with a time of 1:36:34, and Carla Brawley placed third at 1:37:25.

Alongside the half marathon the event featured a 5K, 1K, 400m, and a Toddler Dash and a family fun zone.

Provost Kenneth Duffy, who started the race, said: “The first ever North Lanarkshire Half Marathon was a fantastic event. I’d like to sincerely thank everyone who took part, cheered people on, or helped make it happen.

“From the runners to the organisers, volunteers and spectators, the energy and enthusiasm really showed the best of our community spirit. A special thanks goes to our sponsor, Albert Bartlett, whose generous support made the event possible.

“There was a brilliant atmosphere throughout the day, and I hope we can build on this success in the years ahead.”

A spokesperson for the event’s sponsor said: “Albert Bartlett were delighted to sponsored the first North Lanarkshire Half Marathon event. The atmosphere on the day was fantastic, it was great to see how it brought so much of the community together to both participate or cheer on the runners.

“It was particularly great to see the spread of ages and abilities from experienced runners to young children running in their first event.  Well done to all who took part and thanks to all the team at NLC for delivering a great event.”

Hundreds of friends and families came along to cheer on the runners and enjoy a range of free activities at the family fun zone, including soft play, bouncy castles, and fun games.

One of the runners posted on social media: “Well done to North Lanarkshire Council for putting on a brilliant half marathon. It was a real mental challenge with lots of hills, but the water stations were well placed, and the crowds were fantastic — especially the woman near the end with the hose, perfect timing!

"I love the medal, the goody bag and the t-shirt. Thanks to everyone involved.”

In the 5K event, which saw 108 runners take part, Oliver Rae won the men’s race in 21:33, while Kerry Cassidy took the women’s title in 21:58. The top three finishers in each category were separated by less than a minute.

Plans are already underway for next year’s event.
