An award-winning intergenerational project has successfully brought together fifteen senior citizens from the Chestnut Café at Stepps Parish Church and pupils from St Joseph’s Primary School for a four-week digital skills programme.

The project, delivered through our Driving Digital Locally initiative, aims to bridge the gap between the two generations by providing older adults with essential digital skills while improving confidence, social interaction among the pupils.

Over the course of the sessions, participants use iPads together to explore topics such as online safety, installing useful apps, and navigating the digital world with confidence.

Beyond the technical learning, the program created relationships between the seniors and the pupils. The pupils developed communication and social skills, while the senior’s gained confidence in using technology, proving that learning truly knows no age.

The final day was a celebration when the senior citizens treated the pupils to a special lunch and shared lively line dancing lessons.

Chestnut Café, organiser Esther Hyndman, who took part in the sessions said: “Linking school children with older people and sharing an iPad was an immense success. We learned how to use lots of icons and to recognise fraud emails. The skills, patience and help from the children has encouraged the adults to use their iPad in a more productive way.”

Class teacher from St Joseph’s Primary Vicky Baxter added: “Being part of the Intergenerational Project has been such a rewarding experience for everyone involved. The children and adults have formed real friendships, chatting, sharing skills, and learning so much from each other. It was lovely to see the pupils so excited to meet up with their friends from Chestnut Cafe each week. It is a truly worthwhile project, and one we would love to keep going in the future.”

The success of this initiative highlights the power of collaboration and the positive impact of bringing generations together to learn, share, and grow.

The Driving Digital Locally Intergenerational Project won the Transforming Lives category at this year’s Municipal Journal Achievement Awards.
