Pupils and staff celebrating a double success after receiving a prestigious Gold Sport Award and being nominated for a national volunteering honour.
Kirk o’Shotts Primary School, based in the village of Salsburgh, was awarded the Gold Sport Award in June 2025 and proudly raised their flag in October.
The school has also been nominated for this year’s Sports and Volunteer Awards, thanks to the efforts of its pupil sport leaders.
Head Teacher Marnie Hamilton said the recognition was a testament to the pupils’ enthusiasm and leadership. “As a small school, we would have struggled to offer such a wide range of clubs without the commitment of our pupils,” she said.
“They’ve organised and run gymnastics, tennis, football, dancing and many other clubs. Their leadership, communication and perseverance are skills that will serve them well in the future.”
The school’s Principal Teacher, Mrs Towers, was praised for her role in encouraging pupils to get involved.
“Her love of sport is infectious,” added Mrs Hamilton. “She’s been integral in keeping the momentum going.”
Support also came from Active Schools Coordinators Nicola Joergensen and Demi Mitchell, who helped pupils develop the skills needed to become sport leaders.
Councillor Michael McBride, Convener of Education, Children and Families at North Lanarkshire Council, congratulated the school on its achievements.
“This is a fantastic example of how pupil-led initiatives can make a real difference,” he said. “Kirk o’Shotts Primary is showing how volunteering and sport can help children grow into confident, responsible and successful individuals.”
And younger pupils are already looking forward to becoming sport leaders themselves, inspired by the older children’s example.
Staff believe the volunteering spirit will help promote health and wellbeing across the school, while giving pupils valuable experiences that support their learning and personal development.
