Greenhouse gas emissions across our operations reduced by 4% in 2024/25, helping to achieve an improvement of 51.2% since 2015/16.

This has been achieved as a result of using the energy in our buildings more efficiently, reducing the amount of miles our staff travel during their working day, and improvements to the disposal of household waste.

“We have a responsibility to address climate change by reducing the council’s carbon footprint and reaching our net-zero ambition,” Councillor Helen Loughran, Convener of the Environment and Climate Change Committee said.

“These latest figures for 2024/25 show the positive impact of the practical action the council has taken, reducing overall emission levels by over 50% over the last nine years.

“Our work is continuing with investment in energy efficient measures in council homes, our public buildings and offices, more electric vehicles in our fleet, and in efficient waste management and recycling.”

During 2024/25, a number of actions have contributed to the overall emission reduction including:

  • All 48 new homes at Brandon Street, Motherwell have high level energy efficiency measures internally and externally, including wall insultation, triple glazed windows, and roof-mounted photovoltaic panels.
  • 65 vans in the council fleet moved to electric.
  • Energy conservation measures, such as new boilers, LED lighting and insulation, were installed at 26 sites, including community centres and schools.
  • Orbiston Community Hub in Bellshill is the council’s first fully electric town and community hub, delivering a 90% reduction in carbon emissions and a 60% reduction in energy consumption compared to the previous school buildings.
