Lieutenancy announces two new appointments

Lady Susan Haughey CBE has announced the appointment of two new Deputy Lieutenants to help serve the communities of Lanarkshire as members of the Lord Lieutenant’s team.

Selected in recognition of their outstanding service to the community, Alison Plummer DL and William Tennant DL will assist Lady Haughey in her official duties as Lord Lieutenant. 

Alison Plummer, a resident of Hamilton for over 40 years, brings a wealth of experience and dedication to the role. Having worked as a Secondary Teacher and later as a lecturer and Student Adviser in Further Education, Alison moved to the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) in 2004, where she served as a Qualifications Development Manager until her retirement in 2018. Alison's commitment to community service extends beyond her professional career. She has been an active member of Girlguiding since she was a 7-year-old Brownie, holding various leadership roles within the organisation, including District Commissioner and County Commissioner of Girlguiding Glasgow.

Alison also enjoys supporting young people in her role as Chair of Adult Support for both Girlguiding Scotland and the UK. Additionally, she serves as the Lead Volunteer for Girlguiding Scotland's Centenary celebrations, projects, and events. Alison is involved in other community initiatives, including her role as Chair of the Trustees for St. Mary's for All, a local centre in Hamilton, and as a Director of Hyzone, a collaborative youth project working with South Lanarkshire Council and Hamilton's town centre churches. Alison is married with two daughters and a grandson.

William Tennant is a proud native of Lanark and is widely respected for his contributions to the local community. After attending Lanark Primary School and Edinburgh Academy, William studied law at the University of Edinburgh. Since 1980, he has been a Director at Davidson & Shirley Solicitors in Lanark.

William is involved with many community organisations, he is an Elder at Lanark Greyfriars Church, a member of the local Rotary Club and a Trustee of YMCA Lanark. He is also actively involved in the famous Lanimer Day celebrations and is an ex-Lord Cornet of the renowned event. William is married with three children and has a granddaughter. He enjoys a range of sports and activities, including Rugby, Curling, Skiing and Sailing.

Lord Lieutenant Lady Haughey CBE said: “I’m delighted that Alison and William accepted the invitation to become Deputy Lieutenants. They both bring a wealth of experience and commitment to community service, making them outstanding candidates for this role. I look forward to working closely with them to promote the work of the Lieutenancy as we support community groups, individuals and organisations throughout Lanarkshire.”
