Moorlands Football Club is a step closer to taking ownership of Spindlehowe Playing Field, pavilion and car park following the approval of a community asset transfer bid.
The transfer will enable the club to build on its long-standing commitment to grassroots football by investing in the site and creating improved facilities that will benefit players, volunteers and the wider community.
The club, which was founded in Uddingston in 2003, plans to develop the existing facilities to create a modern, welcoming sports hub that will provide more opportunities for local people of all ages to take part in sport, improve health and wellbeing and strengthen community connections.
The proposal forms part of North Lanarkshire Council's Community Asset Transfer programme, which supports local organisations to take ownership of council assets where they can demonstrate clear community benefit.
Councillor Geraldine Woods, Convener of the Communities Committee, said: “Community Asset Transfer is about putting communities at the heart of local decision-making and giving organisations the opportunity to shape facilities that matter to them. Moorlands Football Club has a strong track record of supporting local people, and this proposal has the potential to create a thriving community asset that will benefit residents for many years to come."
The council's assessment found that the proposal has the potential to deliver significant social and community benefits through increased participation in sport, improved facilities and wider community use of the site.
Councillor Jim Logue, Leader of North Lanarkshire Council, added: "Our ambition is to work alongside communities to create places where people can thrive.
“By supporting organisations like Moorlands Football Club to take ownership of valued local facilities, we are helping to secure their long-term future while encouraging participation in sport, improving health and wellbeing, and creating opportunities for future generations."
Kevin Gibson from the club said: “Our plans to upgrade Spindlehowe Playing Fields in Viewpark include improved pitch maintenance and drainage, new goalposts, secure perimeter fencing, and new multi‑purpose training areas.
“The revitalised facility will offer a safe, accessible space for all ages, supporting sport, wellbeing, and community pride. By restoring purpose and regular use to the site, the redevelopment will also help deter antisocial behaviour and re‑establish the park as a valued community asset.”
The report to the Communities Committee recommended approval of the transfer, subject to the completion of the remaining legal and financial requirements.
Community Asset Transfer is a key part of the council's commitment to community empowerment, helping local organisations take ownership of assets where they can deliver lasting benefits for residents and neighbourhoods across the area.
Formal decision notices will be issued and published shortly, allowing the legal transfer process to begin.
