Mears, in partnership with North Lanarkshire Council, officially welcomed 23 new apprentices to the business this month (August 2021), providing young people in the area with outstanding career opportunities in a range of trades and skills.
The new hires have been given the opportunity to play a leading role in their communities by repairing and maintaining thousands of tenanted properties and public buildings in their home towns.
Apprenticeships are an integral part of Mears’ philosophy, with many of the firm’s senior personnel starting their working life as an apprentice. With this year’s intake, Mears Scotland LLP has created 170 apprenticeships to date with North Lanarkshire Council.
These 23 new apprentices, whose roles include carpentry, plumbing, electrical, plastering, and business administration modern apprenticeships, join the many young people across North Lanarkshire who are already flourishing in their roles as a Mears apprentice.
The council has a clear vision to ensure our plans support the local economy by creating new jobs for residents.
The partnership between Mears and North Lanarkshire Council to create new skilled jobs in the local area has become even more important during the past year.
A recent report has indicated that although the Scottish economy faces unparalleled economic challenges due to Covid-19, work-based learning through apprenticeships is key to recovery.
Alan Long, Executive Director of Mears Scotland LLP said: “We announced our intention to employ 20 apprentices a few months ago and i am thrilled that they have exceeded this target.
“The apprentices come from a range of backgrounds and disciplines, including technical and business support specialities. We are also very pleased to say that we have people from all walks of life coming on board.”
Councillor Jim Logue, Leader of North Lanarkshire Council said: “We are determined to provide young people with meaningful work experiences and apprenticeships that provide a solid grounding from which they can develop their careers.
"This partnership between the council and Mears is an excellent example of this approach and I wish all our young people starting out on their apprenticeships the very best and for their future careers.”
The Strategic Partnership Housing and Non-Housing Repairs and Maintenance Contract provides employment for 500 people across North Lanarkshire.
This sees teams of highly skilled tradespeople and office staff from Mears Group, in partnership with North Lanarkshire Council, support and carry out the maintenance and repair of 36,700 tenanted properties and 1,200 public buildings.
