Mears has taken on 36 new apprentices, showing its ongoing commitment to training skilled workers for the future.
The apprentices will start a four-year training programme in key trades such as joinery, painting, plumbing, heating, bricklaying and plastering.
The programme is delivered through the council’s Strategic Housing and Repairs Partnership with Mears and combines hands-on experience with recognised qualifications.
To mark the occasion, Councillor Jim Logue, Leader of North Lanarkshire Council, welcomed the new apprentices. He said: “It was great to meet these enthusiastic young people and hear about their goals.
“The council is focused on growing the local economy and creating job opportunities. Apprenticeships are a brilliant way to give young people the skills and confidence they need for long-term careers.
“These apprentices will gain valuable experience and play an important role in maintaining and improving council homes and public buildings across North Lanarkshire. I wish them all the best.”
Gavin Hay, Training and Development Manager at Mears, added: “We’re proud to welcome 36 new apprentices this year – our biggest intake yet in North Lanarkshire. It shows our commitment to supporting local jobs, skills and communities.
“Apprenticeships give young people the chance to earn while they learn, and to build careers in construction and maintenance.
“We’re especially pleased that this year’s group is one of our most diverse ever, and we’re excited to see them grow as part of the Mears team.”
The partnership between North Lanarkshire Council and Mears supports around 500 jobs locally.
The apprenticeship scheme is a key part of the company’s social value work, helping local people build lasting careers.
