A new Breathing Space Bench has been unveiled outside Craigneuk Lifelong Learning Centre, giving local people a quiet spot to pause, reflect and reach out for support if they need it.

The bench was officially revealed by Provost Kenneth Duffy on Thursday 13 November as part of a week of mental health and wellbeing activities at the Centre, held in the run-up to World Kindness Day. It replaces a much-missed bench that was removed several years ago and has been welcomed back by the community.

The project was led by North Lanarkshire Council’s Community Partnership Team alongside Breathing Space, the Craigneuk Lifelong Learning Association, and the NHS Health Improvement Team, and funded through the Community Solutions Local Activity Fund and the council’s Local Development Programme.

Lisa-Jane Dock, National Development Officer for NHS 24’s Breathing Space service, said: “At Breathing Space, we welcome every opportunity to collaborate with partners across Scotland to raise awareness and reduce the stigma surrounding mental health. Working with local communities and organisations like Craigneuk Lifelong Learning Association, we are highlighting that services like Breathing Space are available to provide compassionate advice to anyone needing support.”

Provost Kenneth Duffy, who unveiled the bench, said: “Something as simple as a place to sit and gather your thoughts can make a real difference. This bench is a reminder that help is always available and that nobody needs to struggle alone. I’m really pleased to see it back in Craigneuk for the community to use and benefit from.”

Breathing Space (0800 83 85 87) is a free, confidential service for anyone over 16 in Scotland feeling low, anxious or overwhelmed. The number is displayed on the bench for anyone who may need support.
