Mavisbank School pupils have started an exciting new chapter after moving into their refurbished new home at the former Carnbroe Primary School site in Coatbridge.

The move follows extensive refurbishment work to create a modern, welcoming environment designed to meet the needs of secondary pupils with complex additional support and significant medical needs.

Mavisbank School was previously based on Mitchell Street in Airdrie and supports young people from across the central area of North Lanarkshire.

The new building offers more space and flexibility, making it easier to deliver high-quality support and specialist services.

Councillor Michael McBride, Convener of Education, Children and Families, said: “This is a very positive step for Mavisbank School and its pupils.

“The refurbished building at Carnbroe provides a safe, modern and well-equipped environment that will help young people with complex needs to thrive. It also allows staff and partners to work even more closely together to deliver the best possible support for children and families.”

The new setting brings a range of benefits. Pupils will have enhanced opportunities to develop life skills within the school building, helping to prepare them for adulthood.

There is also greater scope for joint working with families and health professionals, supporting a more joined-up approach to care and learning.

The school now has wider access to a school-run hospitality area with community café as well as sensory and therapeutic spaces, along with carefully planned use of technology to support learners with significant support needs. An improved outdoor environment will also allow for vocational activities and outdoor learning, giving pupils more choice and variety in their school day.

The head teacher of Mavisbank School, Helen Delaney, welcomed the move, saying: “Our wonderful new building gives us the space and facilities we need to support our pupils in the best possible way.

“The sensory areas, outdoor spaces and improved technology will make a real difference to daily learning and wellbeing.  Most importantly, our pupils have settled in well and are already enjoying their new surroundings.”

The relocation marks an important investment in specialist education and reinforces the commitment to providing inclusive, high-quality learning environments for children and young people with additional support needs.

The first day for pupils in the new building took place on Thursday 26 February 2026.
