Children and families have celebrated the opening of a new play area on Fife Drive in Forgewood.

Developed by the council, in partnership with Forgewood Housing Co-operative, Forgewood Family Learning Centre and local residents, the play area was officially opened by Councillor Geraldine Woods, Convener of the Communities Committee.

As part of the development, residents were invited to suggest a name for the new play area - the overwhelming response was to name it ‘Maggie’s Park’ in memory of Margaret Halloran.

Margaret lived in Forgewood throughout her life and was well known as a swing park attendant, a role she loved and carried out with great dedication. She spent countless hours supporting local children and working alongside organisations to deliver activities and opportunities within the park and wider community.

Sadly, Margaret passed away in 2021. The naming of the play area recognises her outstanding contribution and lasting impact on generations of local children and residents.

Margaret’s family were delighted by the community’s decision and deeply touched that her commitment, kindness and community spirit will be remembered through a space that will continue to bring children, families and neighbours together for years to come.

“Congratulations to everyone involved in creating this wonderful play area for families in Forgewood,” Councillor Woods said.

“It has been a real partnership project, bringing together residents and families, community groups and the council to design a facility that meets local needs.

“It is fitting that it is named in memory of Margaret Halloran, who gave so much to her community and will be remembered every day by everyone who uses the play area.”

The play area offers a range of features for all ages, including a multi-play unit, an accessible roundabout and trampoline, toddlers multi play unit, springers and a variety of swings, including a basket swing and hammock. For adults and families, picnic benches have been installed to provide a comfortable seating area.

Children from Forgewood Family Learning Centre played a key role in creating artwork for a new sign at the entrance to the play area, helping to celebrate their input in designing the new play area.

Funded by £80,000 from the Local Development Programme and the Scottish Government, the project was managed by our Community Partnership Team.
