A state-of-the-art Multi-use Games Area (MUGA) has officially opened at St Barbara's Primary School in Muirhead, providing pupils and the wider community with a wonderful new sports facility.
It features a 100-metre running track supported by solar-powered cat eyes to enhance visibility for runners. The track surrounds a full-size netball court complete with clearly marked buffer and bench zones.
Mini goals allow for cross-court football matches, while additional tennis court markings expand the sporting opportunities even further.
The remaining surrounding area has been returned to grass and now hosts goals for small-sided football games, offering even more opportunities for pupils to stay active.
It has already become a daily hub of activity since its installation, with classes making full use of the space for PE lessons, training and outdoor learning.
Head Teacher Sheelah McKinney described the new facility as a game-changer for the school community. “The new MUGA has proved transformative for our school. It has completely enhanced our outdoor provision and has given children a safe, high-quality space to develop their skills, build confidence and enjoy being active together. We are using it nearly every day, and the enthusiasm from pupils has been wonderful to see.”
Pupils have also been quick to praise the new facility. P7 pupil Jack said: “It’s brilliant. We can do athletics, basketball and football all in one place. The running track is my favourite, especially when we’re racing. It makes PE much more exciting.”
The project has also been designed with the wider community in mind. An accessible entrance from Drumcavel Road ensures local residents can make use of the space outwith school hours, while newly installed CCTV will help monitor the MUGA and surrounding area to ensure it remains safe and welcoming for all.
Councillor Michael McBride, Convener of Education, Children and Families, welcomed the development. “This fantastic new facility at St Barbara’s Primary School demonstrates our continued commitment to investing in high-quality learning environments for our children and young people.
“The MUGA will support health, wellbeing and community engagement for years to come. It was great to hear that it is already being used so regularly and making such a positive difference.”
In keeping with the school’s identity, the MUGA has been finished in colours inspired by St Barbara’s Primary’s logo and the school badge will soon take pride of place within the surface design.
