Hospice Care Week 2025 is underway across the UK, with this year’s theme - “Hospice care is more than you thinkaiming to challenge perceptions and highlight the breadth of support available to people with life-limiting illnesses.

Running from 6 to 12 October, the national campaign, led by Hospice UK, seeks to raise awareness of the vital role hospices play, not only within dedicated facilities but also in homes and communities across the country.

To mark the week, we are illuminating the Civic Centre in Motherwell and the Boulevard of Lights at Centenary Park in Airdrie in green and purple, the colours of St Andrew’s Hospice, as a symbol of support and appreciation for all those involved in hospice care.

In North Lanarkshire, we work in partnership with organisations including Marie Curie, St Andrew’s Hospice, and community nursing teams to deliver compassionate palliative care tailored to individual needs. Services range from pain management and emotional support to help with everyday tasks, enabling people to live well at the end of life.

Provost Kenneth Duffy visited staff at the St Andrew’s Hospice shop in Coatbridge to mark the occasion. He said: “Hospice care is about dignity, comfort and making the most of every day.

“We’re proud to stand with Hospice UK and our local care teams to highlight the incredible work they do, often quietly, but always with compassion.”

Louise O’Donnell, Head of Income Generation at St Andrew’s Hospice, praised the contribution of volunteers: “Our volunteers are crucial to delivering the services that mean so much to so many families in North Lanarkshire.

“If anyone is interested in finding out more about the opportunities available, please go to Shopping Outlet - St Andrews Hospice.”
