In 2022, North Lanarkshire Council published a research report on the lived experiences of Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities living in North Lanarkshire.

The report, titled Our Lives, examined the challenges and opportunities faced by ethnic minority residents and provided evidence-based recommendations that have helped shape policy and services.

It highlighted key areas of concern for people such as employment and skills, language and communication, digital inclusion, health and wellbeing, community cohesion and integration, and community engagement.

On November 18 an event took place involving over 80 people from our minority ethnic communities and our community planning partners to look at what progress has been made since the research was published.

Councillor Ayeshah Khan, Equalities Champion for North Lanarkshire Council, said:
“This research gave a voice to communities that had too often been overlooked and provided us with the evidence we needed to make real, positive change

“We and our community planning partners have made good progress, however, the event on 18 November shows that we still have work to do in celebrating our growing and diverse populations and creating a fairer, more inclusive society.

“Our commitment is clear: we will work in partnership with our communities to ensure that every resident, regardless of background, feels valued, supported, and included.”

The findings have already informed practical steps to improve access to services, expand language support, promote cultural awareness and celebration, and tackle barriers to employment.

Council staff will continue to work closely with community groups and partner organisations to implement the research recommendations, ensuring that every resident has the opportunity to thrive.
