A new initiative is encouraging families across North Lanarkshire to consider the benefits of school meals
Throughout November, pupils have been taking home packed lunches as part of a drive to increase uptake of free school meals.
The scheme targets children who qualify for free meals but haven’t been using their entitlement.
All pupils from Primary 1 to Primary 5 receive free school meals under the Universal Entitlement programme, yet many families are missing out on the savings and also the nutritional benefits.
By sending home packed lunches, schools hope to show parents the quality and variety of the updated menus, which now include dishes such as Spanish Chicken and other healthy favourites.
Councillor Helen Loughran, Convener of Environment and Climate, said: “This initiative is about supporting families and ensuring every child benefits from nutritious meals.
“By sending home packed lunches, we’re showing parents the quality and variety available and helping them see the real value of using their entitlement.
“It was great to hear the pupils chatting about their new favourite dishes such as Spanish Chicken. Their enthusiasm shows the positive impact of these changes.”
Deputy Head Teacher Susan Clelland from Berryhill Primary School welcomed the programme, saying it helps strengthen the link between school and home when it comes to healthy eating.
