Young people across North Lanarkshire are taking the lead in promoting menstrual wellbeing, reducing stigma and improving access to free period products through a new Period Ambassadors Programme launched in secondary schools across the area.

The initiative, which supports access to free period products in schools, has already secured the backing of 12 high schools, with the hope it will be adopted by more as the project develops.

The launch event brought together staff and pupils for a programme of interactive activities, including quizzes, workshops, discussion sessions and the development of an ambassador-led video campaign. Participants also shared feedback on how access to free period products could be improved within schools and local communities.

More than 60 volunteer pupil ambassadors, supported by 13 Staff Champions, have signed up to help raise awareness, encourage positive conversations about menstrual health and promote the support available to young people.

The programme aims to increase awareness of free period products, foster open and positive discussions about menstrual health. It will see pupil ambassadors organising awareness-raising activities, events and projects tailored to their own school communities.

Councillor Geraldine Woods, Convener of Communities at North Lanarkshire Council, said: "I'm delighted to see so many young people stepping forward to become Period Ambassadors and help create a positive culture around menstrual health in our schools.

"Access to free period products is an important part of ensuring every young person feels supported, included and able to participate fully in school life. By empowering pupils to lead conversations with their peers, this programme will help break down stigma, raise awareness of the support available and ensure that no young person is disadvantaged because of their period.

"I would like to thank everyone for their commitment to this important initiative, and I look forward to seeing the positive impact it will have across our schools and communities."

The schools taking part are Airdrie Academy, Bellshill Academy, Braidhurst High School, Brannock High School, Buchanan High School, Calderhead High School, Caldervale High School, Clyde Valley High School, Coltness High School, Our Lady's High School, Cumbernauld, Our Lady's High School, Motherwell, and Taylor High School.
