Plans for the next phase of our affordable housing investment have been set out, with almost 2,400 homes proposed for inclusion in the council’s Strategic Housing Investment Plan for the next five years.
The plan includes 1,973 homes from projects already approved, alongside 399 homes from new projects being proposed. Together, they include new council homes, housing delivered with Registered Social Landlords and open market and empty home purchases.
One of the new projects is the proposed development at Brandon Street, Motherwell, with plans being developed for 44 new homes at the former Centre Point site. The Brandon Street development is one of a number of new projects being put forward, alongside proposals in Newarthill, Wishaw, Gartcosh, Bellshill and other communities.
The plans build on strong progress already being made. During 2025/26, the council delivered 126 affordable homes and started construction on a further 347. RSL partners delivered another 137 homes, meaning 263 new affordable homes were completed across North Lanarkshire during the year. Around 256 homes are expected to be delivered in 2026/27, with around 340 more scheduled to start construction.
Housing Convener Councillor Michael McPake said: “Good-quality, affordable housing makes a real difference to people’s lives and to the communities they call home.
“The proposed Brandon Street development in Motherwell is a good example of the investment we are planning, with 44 new homes proposed for the former Centre Point/Mega Bar site.
“Across North Lanarkshire, we have ambitious plans for the next five years, building on the strong progress already being made. This investment will help provide good-quality, energy-efficient and accessible homes for people and families across our communities, while supporting wider regeneration and helping meet local housing need.
“There is still work to do. Funding will need to be confirmed, and individual projects will continue to be assessed to make sure they are viable and provide value. But we will keep working with our partners and the Scottish Government to maximise investment and deliver homes that people and our communities can be proud of.”
The plans will depend on funding approval from the Scottish Government, as well as each project being viable. North Lanarkshire has an allocation of £36m confirmed by the Scottish Government for 2026/27, with a further £114.7m identified for the following three years. However, more funding is needed to deliver all the proposed projects.
The Strategic Housing Investment Plan for 2027/28 to 2031/32 is due to be submitted to the Scottish Government by 30 October 2026.
