Provost Jean Jones has congratulated staff at Cumbernauld Theatre on a successful opening production of Romeo and Juliet in their new home, Lanternhouse.

This state-of-the-art performing arts venue is located on the Cumbernauld Academy campus and houses two performance spaces including the main 300-seat auditorium, studio theatre and dance studio. It also has an 84-seat cinema and a café/bistro that are due to open later this year.

The first public performance in the new building took place on Friday 1 October 2021.

Speaking during a visit to the theatre on Friday 15 October, Provost Jones said: “I was blown away by the quality of the performances and really impressed with the new theatre, it’s facilities and quality of design.

“I wanted to show my colleagues – councillors Jim Logue, Leader of North Lanarkshire Council, and Frank McNally, Convener of Education and Families, just how good it all is!

“I also wanted to return as soon as possible to congratulate staff at Lanternhouse on what they have achieved.”

Sarah Price, CEO of Cumbernauld Theatre Trust, said: “Lanternhouse represents a new era for the community of Cumbernauld and the council working together to make Cumbernauld a great place to live. We are proud to be a part of the wider vision for community-led services in North Lanarkshire, and to be empowered to launch this new venue.”

We are working in close partnership with Cumbernauld Theatre Trust at Lanternhouse as part of the delivery of a creative programme that embraces artistic excellence, community engagement and inclusive participation.

Tickets for the full programme of live performance and creative learning activities go on sale online at www.lanternhousearts.org and by telephone booking by Box Office: 01236 732887
