Free school transport for eligible primary school pupils in North Lanarkshire will continue to be in line with current arrangements.

It means that pupils in primary schools who live more than one mile away from their catchment primary school will continue to be entitled to free school transport.

The decision to reverse the decision to adjust the eligibility criteria was taken at a special meeting of the full council on Wednesday, November 27, 2024.

Councillor Jim Logue, Leader of North Lanarkshire Council, said, “We have listened to families who have been concerned about the impact of the future changes to school transport eligibility on them, and the council has agreed to reverse its decision and continue to provide free school transport at a level more generous than most other local authorities in Scotland.

“We know how important this issue is for our communities, and despite the that the council is facing an increased shortfall of £66million over three years, we have found a fair and proportionate way to ensure primary-aged children who qualify for free school transport remain to do so from the next academic year.”
