Communities across North Lanarkshire will soon be benefitting from a £10 million investment aimed at improving leisure, cultural and community facilities throughout the area.
The investment, announced as part of the council’s 2026/27 budget, will deliver significant upgrades to sports facilities, heritage venues, community centres and public spaces.
In Wishaw work is well underway on a replacement to the eight lane running track at the town’s sports centre.
The £500,000 project features a complete resurfacing using a high-performance, technical Conipur sports surface.
Designed to protect the area’s sporting legacy and attract higher-level competition, the upgrade also includes significant improvements to the specialist throwing and high jump areas.
Once complete, the revitalised track will serve as a premier training hub for both Law and District Athletic Club and Motherwell Athletics Club, while also playing a central role in hosting council athletics sports camps and local school events.
Councillor Jim Logue, Leader of North Lanarkshire Council, said: “We are striving to create modern, accessible spaces where residents can connect, stay active and thrive.
“And this £10million investment demonstrates our long-term commitment to delivering high-quality facilities that meet the needs of local people while strengthening community pride and supporting regeneration across North Lanarkshire.”
Sports facilities across the area will see major improvements as eight pitches and four pavilions are resurfaced or upgraded. Schools and community facilities in Cumbernauld, Coatbridge, Motherwell, Wishaw, Shotts and Airdrie will see their sports pitches upgraded.
In addition to the pitches, Cleland football pavilion, Harthill pavilion, West End pavilion in Bellshill and the Gartferry/Moodiesburn pavilion will all be upgraded.
The multi-million pound investment programme will also include investment in town centres, parks and open spaces, helping to improve local environments while supporting active lifestyles and community wellbeing.
