Council tenants across North Lanarkshire are set to benefit from a major £40 million investment in modern central heating systems.

A new four-year contract with Sureserve Compliance North (Gas Call) and Saltire Facilities Management, which began in April, will see around 1,500 new central heating systems installed in the first year alone, each fitted with smart thermostatic heating controls to give residents more comfort and control over their energy use. So far, 600 new systems have already been installed in tenants’ homes.

Councillor Michael McPake, Convener of Housing, recently visited a property in Airdrie, one of the first homes to benefit from the programme.

He said: "This is another important step in our work to make homes warmer, safer and more energy-efficient for tenants. Heating upgrades like this can help reduce energy costs, tackle fuel poverty, and provide peace of mind with reliable modern systems. It’s great to see the difference these improvements are already making in people’s homes."

Tenant Helen Loughran added her praise after her system was fitted: "The new heating has made such a difference already, my house is much warmer, and the controls are really easy to use. The team who came out to fit it were brilliant, quick, and left everything tidy. I couldn’t be happier with it."

This major heating contract forms part of our wider £90.6 million Housing Revenue Account (HRA) Capital Programme for 2025/26, which is delivering a wide range of improvements for tenants, including:

  • £28 million window and door replacement contract – with triple-glazed windows and high-performance doors bringing added warmth, energy savings, and security.
  • Over 1,300 solar panel installations, insulation works, and modern heating upgrades to help reduce fuel bills.
  • Ongoing kitchen and bathroom modernisation for homes reaching renewal stage.
  • Sprinkler systems and fire safety upgrades across high-rise blocks and sheltered housing.
  • Accessibility improvements in retirement housing complexes, including new lifts and better access for tenants.

Together, these investments support our commitment to tackling fuel poverty, meeting new national housing standards, and improving lives for local communities.
