Our Tackling Poverty Team has helped residents secure a record-breaking £55.3 million in additional income over the past year—a 14% increase on the previous year—through benefit checks, appeals and financial advice.

This investment in poverty reduction is delivering exceptional value. For every £1 spent on the Tackling Poverty Team, £30.37 is returned to the local economy.

Commissioned external services also generated £7.65 million, with a return of £20.83 for every £1 invested.

Nearly 30,000 benefit checks were completed in 2024/25, helping thousands of residents access the support they’re entitled to.

The council’s cost of living helpline, debt advice services and targeted support for cancer patients through the Macmillan Lanarkshire Advice Service are just some of the ways residents are being helped to navigate financial hardship.

Councillor Chris Costello, Convener of the Wellbeing and Tackling Poverty Committee, said: “This report shows the real and lasting impact of our Tackling Poverty Team. Every pound we invest is making a difference. We’re proud of the work being done and committed to continuing our efforts to support the most vulnerable in our communities.”

The Tackling Poverty Team provides free and confidential benefits and debt advice for North Lanarkshire residents.
