A special event recently celebrated the achievements of pupils who successfully completed their Level 4 Skills for Work Automotive qualification.

This is the first year that the council and Remit Training have worked together to offer this qualification, which has already had a strong impact.

Twenty-three pupils from three local high schools took part, and three learners progressed into Modern Apprenticeships with well-known employers, Parks of Hamilton and Turners Soham Ltd.

Two pupils from Coltness High School moved directly into employment, while one pupil from Clyde Valley High School also secured a position.

Pupils from Brannock High School also took part and successfully completed the course.

The Skills for Work programme is designed to give young people a solid foundation in the automotive sector.

The course includes essential industry areas such as health and safety, inspections, routine maintenance, fabrication, and vehicle modification. These subjects form part of the first year of a Modern Apprenticeship, giving pupils a real head start if they choose to continue in the trade.

Links with employers have been key to the programme's success. Matthew O’Rourke and Jayden Irvine started Light Motor Vehicle Apprenticeships with Parks Motor Group, while Calum Evans has taken up a Heavy Goods Vehicle Apprenticeship with Turners Soham Ltd.

And Brannock High School's  Mikal Kuca has secured an apprenticeship at Douglas Park BMW.

The course offers excellent progression opportunities and has been well received by all involved.

The partnership between the council and Remit has proven to be a successful model, with pupils showing real commitment and enthusiasm throughout.

Discussions are underway to expand the partnership into the 2025/26 academic year, giving more young people access to valuable skills and career pathways in the automotive industry.

The celebration event took place on Friday, 4 April.
