Seven pupils from St Andrew’s High School in Coatbridge have secured apprenticeships with housing and property services company Mears as part of its latest recruitment programme.

The pupils were successful after taking part in a range of employability and careers activities designed to help young people prepare for the world of work.

Several pupils also took part in the Mears’ Talent Tasters programme, which offers hands-on experience and an insight into working within the industry. The initiative helped participants develop their skills, confidence and knowledge of apprenticeship opportunities.

Councillor Michael McBride praised the pupils and those who helped support them.

He said: “This is a fantastic achievement for our young people and a reflection of their hard work and determination.

“I would also like to recognise the commitment of our teaching staff, who continue to support pupils in developing the skills, confidence and ambition they need for life beyond school.

“Securing seven apprenticeships is something the whole school community can be proud of. It shows what can be achieved when motivated young people, dedicated staff and supportive employers work together to create meaningful opportunities.”

Gavin Hay from Mears said: “It’s great to engage with a local school that encourages its pupils to consider apprenticeships and allows them time to attend Mears Talent Tasters programmes. When all these things come together, great things happen.”

Ava Walker added: “The Talent Tasters programme with Mears helped me prepare for the recruitment process and increased my confidence. I got to find out what I was good at and which areas I had to work on. I would recommend this to any pupil thinking about leaving school.”
