Glencryan School pupils are celebrating after earning prestigious recognition for their work in hospitality.

Young people taking part in the school’s vocational hospitality programme have achieved the AA College Rosette: Highly Commended, alongside Silver Accreditation from People 1st International. The awards highlight both the quality of the learning on offer and the high standard pupils are working to as part of the programme.

High quality hospitality is delivered at Glencryan School in Cumbernauld through its on-site restaurant, which is open to the public on Thursdays and Fridays at lunchtime.

Pupils play a key role in running the service, mentored by Chef Chris Gould, while working towards the Qualifications Scotland course award, Skills for Work in Hospitality at Levels 4 and 5, gaining hands-on experience in a real working environment.

The programme helps young people to build confidence, develop practical skills and prepare for the world of work. Pupils go on to positive destinations after leaving school, including employment within the hospitality sector and beyond.

One pupil taking part in the programme said: “Working in the restaurant has helped me build my confidence and learn what it’s really like to work in hospitality. I enjoy being part of the team and serving customers, and it’s made me feel more prepared for what I want to do after school.”

Louise Canavan, Depute Head Teacher at Glencryan School, said: “We are extremely proud to see our pupils recognised through these awards. They reflect the quality of our hospitality provision and the commitment shown by our young people. The experience they gain through the restaurant and the vocational programme helps prepare them for life beyond school and supports them to move on to positive destinations.

“Our school is committed to maintaining its high standards in vocational learning and to strengthening partnerships and opportunities that continue to enhance outcomes for young people in preparation for leaving school.”
