Gym users are returning to Airdrie Leisure Centre in increasing numbers, with a significant rise in memberships following recent investment in the facility.
Membership has grown from 3,740 in the same period last year to 4,085 this year, reflecting strong demand for the upgraded offer.
In total, across all North Lanarkshire leisure facilities, Active NL membership is now at its highest recorded level, with more than 45,500 active members.
Councillor Jim Logue, Leader of North Lanarkshire Council and a long-time patron of Airdrie Leisure Centre, said: “These investments reflect our commitment to providing modern, high-quality leisure facilities that support health and wellbeing for the majority of people in our communities. I would encourage anyone who hasn’t visited yet to come along and find a class or activity that suits them.”
One gym user said: “It’s more than just a gym – it’s a community where we can meet friends. The staff are friendly and welcoming, and the recent improvements have made a real difference.”
A total of £333,000 has been invested in a full gym refit and redesign within the Airdrie Leisure Centre complex. This includes new cardio, pin-loaded, plate-loaded and cable equipment, alongside improved functional and free weight areas. Lighting and flooring are also being upgraded throughout the venue.
Further improvements include a new spin studio with Keiser bikes, upgraded air conditioning, lighting and sound systems, an enhanced main studio, and a new dedicated studio for yoga and Pilates. A Power studio has also been added, introducing a boutique-style fitness offer for users.
In addition, upgrades are being made to walkways, stairwells and the outdoor entrance area.
The news comes on the back of significant investment in leisure facilities across the area, with major upgrades also completed at Shotts Leisure Centre and work starting on the running track at Wishaw Sports Centre.
In Shotts, improvements are being made across several areas to enhance the overall customer experience.
The health suite has been refreshed with a replacement sauna and steam room, new tiling throughout and the addition of a shower within the health suite area.
The gym is also being upgraded, with new flooring, redecoration of gym areas, corridors and the stairwell, and a full refurbishment of the functional training area, including a new rig and upgraded cardiovascular equipment.
Further investment has seen upgraded cardio equipment and a complete refurbishment of the functional fitness space, including new flooring, a new functional training rig, upgraded accessories and a full range of HIIT cardio equipment.
The reception area is also being fully redecorated, creating a more welcoming entrance for customers.
Wishaw Sports Centre is seeing a major upgrade to its running track, with the existing track being replaced to meet the standards set out in the IAAF Track & Field Facilities Manual.
Work will start soon and is expected to last between 12 and 15 weeks, depending on weather conditions.
The investment will ensure the track remains suitable for both training and competitive use.
