A ten-year plan for the future of Coatbridge has been prepared, after extensive consultation with residents, community groups and businesses.
The Regeneration Plan, supported by an initial four-year Investment Plan, was produced by Coatbridge Neighbourhood Board and has been endorsed by the council.
It will now be submitted to the UK Government for approval. If the Regeneration Plan is approved, the town will receive £5,306,000 capital funding and £1,352,000 in revenue funding to be invested over the next four years, starting from April 2026.
This is the first stage in a ten-year plan which will see Coatbridge receive a total of £19.5m in UK Government funding.
The Regeneration Plan outlines the community’s vision for the future and includes three key priorities identified by local people during the consultation:
- more opportunities for young people – to help improve health and wellbeing, develop skills and improve life chances;
- invest in what we have – to provide improved opportunities to address health inequalities and to access local culture and sport offerings; and
- a safe and friendly town centre – the heart of the community. A place where people can access key local services and socialise together. A place where businesses can start-up and thrive.
“The development of the Regeneration Plan is a significant achievement for the Neighbourhood Board, bringing together the ideas and aspirations of the community into a clear vision for Coatbridge,” said Gavin Whitefield, Coatbridge Neighbourhood Board Chair.
“It will guide the investment over the next four years towards achieving the Board’s vision for the town and deliver improvements for residents and businesses.”
The vision: By 2036, Coatbridge will be a more vibrant place with the town’s existing strengths enhanced. A place where people and local businesses can thrive.
- Coatbridge’s communities will be stronger, with better social cohesion and more opportunities to come together, while empowering young people to shape the future of the town.
- Coatbridge’s key physical assets will be improved, better connected and promoted to ensure they can be enjoyed by current and future generations.
- Coatbridge’s Main Street will become a vibrant heart of the town, better connected to its key assets and neighbourhoods. The town centre will be seen as a hub for civic, community and social life.
Coatbridge Neighbourhood Board was set up to oversee development and delivery of the Regeneration Plan. It includes an independent chairperson, representation from local business and community organisations as well as a representative from Police Scotland, an MP and MSP, and two local elected members.
