Our Rent Assistance Fund is continuing to be a vital safety net for tenants, helping more people manage with the cost-of-living crisis and avoid the risk of losing their homes.

Launched in 2023, the fund was designed to offer short-term financial support to council tenants struggling with rent arrears. Since then, it has helped thousands of households across local towns and villages.

In 2024/25 alone, more than 2,500 applications were approved, with an average award of £468. Importantly, the fund has already prevented 41 evictions and avoided 119 court actions, giving families much-needed peace of mind.

Councillor Michael McPake, Convener of Housing, explained: “This fund has been a real lifeline for so many council tenants across North Lanarkshire. We know the pressures people are under right now, and this support has meant that families can stay in their homes, avoid the stress of court action, and help them get back on their feet a bit financially.

“It’s about giving people breathing space and reassurance, and it shows our commitment to putting people first.”

Since its launch, the Rent Assistance Fund has prevented more than 70 evictions and helped over 200 families avoid court action, demonstrating the difference early financial support can make. Alongside financial help, the fund also signposts tenants to other advice and support services, helping them to manage longer-term challenges.

Council tenants who are worried about rent arrears or struggling to make payments are encouraged to contact their local housing office as soon as possible. Staff are on hand to provide guidance, talk through options, and help with applications.
