Schools across North Lanarkshire are taking part in a new Smart Spending Challenge designed to help children and young people develop important money management skills.
Primary schools have been invited to complete a range of activities that encourage pupils to think about budgeting, making informed spending decisions and understanding the value of money.
And in secondary schools, S4, S5 and S6 pupils are taking part in financial education sessions aimed at preparing school leavers for managing money independently. The sessions cover practical topics that young people may face as they move into further education, training or employment.
Councillor Chris Costello, Convener of the Wellbeing and Tackling Poverty committee said: “Learning how to manage money is an important life skill and it’s never too early to start. The Smart Spending Challenge gives pupils practical knowledge that can help them make informed financial decisions both now and in the future.
“I’m delighted to see schools across North Lanarkshire getting involved and finding creative ways to promote financial awareness. By helping young people develop confidence with money, we are supporting them to build strong foundations for later life.”
As part of the initiative, participating schools will also receive a personalised Cost of the School Day Page Tiger resource, providing information and support tailored to their school community.
Schools completing the challenge will be recognised with certificates in celebration of their commitment to promoting financial wellbeing and helping young people develop skills for life.
Challenge Poverty Week takes place from 5 to 11 October and a range of free events are taking place across North Lanarkshire.
