School pupils from across Lanarkshire have been showcasing their sporting talents while raising awareness about suicide prevention.

Over 200 senior students from high schools in both North and South Lanarkshire took part in football and netball tournaments at Ravenscraig Sports Centre on Wednesday, March 27.

The event was organised in support of the suicide prevention campaigns of both North and South Lanarkshire Councils, which aim to tackle the stigma surrounding suicide and encourage open conversations to prevent it.

Provost Kenneth Duffy welcomed representatives from Airdrieonians and Motherwell FC in supporting the event and to highlight the importance of working together to prevent suicide in communities across Lanarkshire.

Louise Roarty, Deputy Leader of North Lanarkshire Council explained: "It was fantastic to see so many pupils and schools taking part in this vital awareness raising tournament. There were some really talented teams and individuals taking part and it was really encouraging to see the young people wanting to help spread the word about suicide prevention.

“Peer pressure, online bullying and the pressure to succeed are concerns that can weigh heavily on young minds. We want to share the message that help is available and encourage people to talk openly about suicide so we can all help to try and prevent it.

The netball competition was won by Calderhead HS from Shotts with Coltness HS, Wishaw scooping the overall award for the 'Champions League' football tournament. Pupils from Coatbridge HS also collected a trophy for winning the 'Europa League' section of the football competition.

For individuals who are concerned about suicide or someone who may be at risk, the Samaritans can be reached at 116123, and Breathing Space is available at 0800 83 85 87.
