Pupils and staff at St Brendan’s Primary School in Motherwell have come together to lead a large-scale litter picking project, as part of their ECO Scotland campaign.
The week-long initiative saw children from every class take part in tidying up their local community.
Armed with litter pickers, gloves, bin bags, and high-vis vests, the children worked in teams to collect rubbish and learn about the importance of looking after the environment.
Supported by families and local residents, the pupils spent time transforming the spaces they live and play in.
Their efforts were also sponsored, raising funds for a magical Christmas trip to see The Little Mermaid in Glasgow.
Head Teacher Maura Oates praised the pupils for their enthusiasm and teamwork. She said: “We’re incredibly proud of how our children embraced this project. It wasn’t just about picking up litter—it was about showing pride in our community and learning how small actions can make a big difference.
“The pupils were brilliant, and it was lovely to see them working together with such pride.”
Provost Kenneth Duffy visited the school during the clean-up and was full of praise for the young environmental champions. “It’s inspiring to see a whole school come together like this,” he said.
“The pupils of St Brendan’s have shown real leadership and community spirit. Their efforts are a credit to the school and to Motherwell as a whole.”
The litter picking project is part of the school’s wider commitment to citizenship and environmental education.
Noah, a pupil in P5, said: “We wanted to make our parks and streets cleaner for everyone and knowing it would help us get to the panto at Christmas made it even more exciting!”
