Pupils and staff at St Brigid's Primary School are celebrating after achieving the prestigious Gold Rights Respecting Schools Award.

The award, granted by UNICEF UK, recognises schools that have fully embedded children’s rights throughout their ethos and curriculum.

It is the highest level of the Rights Respecting Schools Award and highlights the school’s strong commitment to promoting equality, respect and pupil voice.

The Newmains school has worked for several years to ensure that the principles of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child are at the heart of school life.

Inspectors praised the way pupils understand their rights and responsibilities and how they show respect for one another and the wider community.

Head Teacher Catherine Corr said she was extremely proud of the whole school community.

“This Gold Award is a fantastic achievement for St Brigid’s. It reflects the dedication of our pupils, staff and families in creating a nurturing environment where children’s rights are understood, respected and lived out every day,” she said.

“Our children have been at the centre of this journey. They speak confidently about their rights and demonstrate kindness, fairness and respect in all that they do. I could not be prouder of them.”

The award recognises how children at St Brigid’s are encouraged to share their views, take on leadership roles and make a positive difference both within the school and beyond.

From pupil committees to community projects, young people have played a key role in shaping school life.

Convener of Education, Children and Families Michael McBride also praised the achievement. “I would like to congratulate everyone at St Brigid’s Primary School on securing the Gold Rights Respecting Award. This is a testament to the hard work and commitment of the entire school community.

“By placing children’s rights at the heart of education, St Brigid’s is helping to develop confident, responsible young people who understand the importance of respect, inclusion and fairness.”
