Pupils from St Kevin's Primary School entertained guests with songs from popular West End musicals as their new £17.3 million community hub in Bargeddie was officially opened.

Provost Kenneth Duffy unveiled a plaque at a special event on Tuesday 3 November.

He said: "It was a pleasure to officially open St Kevin's Community Hub. The pupils have clearly settled in well, and this is a building the whole community of Bargeddie can be proud of."

Pupils and staff moved into the brand new building in May this year.

Acting Head Teacher Pauline Doran said it had been a privilege to welcome the school community into the new building. She said it was designed to inspire teaching and learning and help every child reach their full potential.

P7 pupil Lucas said: "The best thing about the new facilities are the running track, cafeteria and the wilderness area."

The opening was attended by council leader Jim Logue, deupte leader Louise Roarty, education convener Michael McBride, local councillors Gary Robinson and Lesley Mitchell along with Father James O'Kane.

St Kevin's used to share a campus with Bargeddie Primary. However, a new building was needed because the area's population has grown.

The curved building was designed by Stallan Brand, which won the design competition. Its shape takes its inspiration from the story of St Kevin and the blackbird's nest. Kier Construction built it, appointed by Hub South West on behalf of North Lanarkshire Council.

At the opening event Councillor Louise Roarty, Depute Leader of North Lanarkshire Council thanked everyone who helped deliver the project.

Inside, the building has an eight-class primary school with space for 242 pupils. It also has a family and nurture room, a drama box, a cooking lab and an e-learning zone. Classrooms open onto a shared activity space with booths and furniture designed to suit different ways of learning.

Outside, there is a forest school area and a multi-use games area. There is also a two-court gym hall. All of these can be used by the community outside school hours, including evenings and weekends.

The project forms part of North Lanarkshire Council’s wider Town and Community Hub Delivery Programme, which aims to improve local facilities and create modern spaces for learning and community life.

St Stephen's Community Hub in Coatbridge is due to open next week, and Gartcosh Community Hub opened to pupils earlier this month. The extension to Chryston High School will be ready early in the new year.

Since St Kevin's opened in the Spring it has been used by groups delivering events and activities for hundreds of local people in the community to enjoy.
