Provost Kenneth Duffy visited the Wishaw Men’s Shed on Saturday 15 November to present a cheque for £493, raised at this year’s annual Suicide Prevention Football Tournament at Ravenscraig.

The donation was made on behalf of North and South Lanarkshire Councils’ Suicide Prevention campaigns, with the funds supporting the Men’s Shed’s ongoing work to improve mental wellbeing and reduce social isolation in the local community.

The visit coincided with the group’s open day at Wishaw Bowling Club, where residents were invited to meet members, enjoy refreshments and learn more about the wide range of activities the Men’s Shed offers. Local charities and mental health organisations, including SAMH and Chris’s House were also in attendance to offer support and advice.

Provost Duffy said: “The Men’s Shed is a place where people can talk openly, find support and look out for one another, and that’s exactly why this donation matters. Suicide affects too many families across Lanarkshire, and raising awareness is one of the most important things we can do. I want to thank everyone who took part in the football tournament to raise these funds - the players, volunteers, schools and community groups.”

Around 250 players took part in September’s 7-a-side football event to mark World Suicide Prevention Day, helping spark conversations about mental health and reminding people that support is always available.

The Wishaw Men’s Shed continues to grow since its launch earlier this year, offering companionship, practical activities and a safe space for men of all ages. Members recently moved into a permanent base at Gowkthrapple Community Centre and remain active in their community, from social projects to outreach work.
