Volunteers at Greenhead Moss Community Nature Park, Wishaw have received a national award for their conservation work.
The group’s efforts have been recognised with an It’s Your Neighbourhood Award from environmental charity Keep Scotland Beautiful.
The volunteers meet at Greenhead Moss each week, working alongside our Countryside Rangers to maintain and improve the park and Local Nature Reserve.
Among the range of tasks they carry out are tree planting, creating and maintaining paths and verges, litter picking, and managing the meadows and wildlife garden. They also build nesting boxes for small birds and tawny owls.
“Congratulations to the volunteers on their award and, on behalf of the council, I’d like thank the group for the wonderful work they do,” said Councillor Helen Loughran, Convener of the Environment and Climate Change Committee.
“Greenhead Moss is very popular with local residents who enjoy the wildlife and nature as they walk around. The volunteers’ knowledge and commitment are invaluable to our Countryside Rangers in developing the facilities and biodiversity within the reserve.”
Greenhead Moss Community Nature Park and Local Nature Reserve covers 100 hectares with wildlife habitats including ponds, wildflower meadows, remnant raised peat bog, old and new woodlands which are home to badgers, roe deer, foxes, insects and birds. Most of the paths across the park are tarmac and accessible for wheelchairs and pushchairs.
It’s Your Neighbourhood is Keep Scotland Beautiful’s community environmental improvement initiative, managed in partnership with the Royal Horticultural Society.
