Senior school pupils from across North Lanarkshire have come together to support suicide prevention, using sport to encourage positive conversations about mental health

Around 150 young people took part in football and netball tournaments at Ravenscraig Sports Centre on Wednesday, 7 October, organised as part of North Lanarkshire Council’s suicide prevention campaign.

Provost Kenneth Duffy helped kick off the tournaments and welcomed pupils taking part. He said: “It was great to help get the tournaments underway and see so many young people coming together for a positive and important cause.

“Sport is a brilliant way to bring people together, build friendships and create a sense of belonging. Events like this also give us an opportunity to remind young people that it’s OK to talk about how they’re feeling and that support is available if they’re struggling.

“Suicide prevention is something we can all play a part in. By looking out for each other, starting conversations and making sure people know where to turn for help, we can make a real difference.”

In the netball competition, St Margaret’s took the title, with Dalziel A finishing runners-up. Dalziel won the football Premiership, with Clyde Valley runners-up, while St Aidan’s High won the Championship and Brannock High finished runners-up.

For anyone struggling or concerned about someone at risk, support is available. Samaritans can be contacted free on 116 123, while Breathing Space is available on 0800 83 85 87.

More information about suicide prevention support is available on North Lanarkshire Council's suicide prevention webpage.
