Wishaw Local Outcome Improvement Plan highlights 24/25

An original request was submitted from Newmains and District Community Council to remove the old play area at Brown Street and relocate a new play area to Claire Street/Newton Drive area. 

The Community Partnership Team carried out viability and feasibility investigations, consulted widely with Newmains and District residents, and in line with the plans for the new Newmains & St Brigid's Community Hub, the plan for a brand-new play area on the recreational ground situated behind the hub was set in motion.

The Community Partnership Officer delivered further consultation with the wider community in the form of a survey and school workshops within both the old schools at Newmains Primary and Nursery and St Brigid's Primary to inform the design specification of the final play park design.

The creation of this dynamic play area was a vision taken forward by the Community Partnership Team by working closely with Newmains and District Community Council and the children and young people from Newmains and St Brigid’s Primary Schools.

The play area includes a magnificent castle themed climbing unit, a toddler climbing unit, an accessible roundabout and trampoline, a large set of swings and a very popular cable way. There are also new benches installed to create a seating area for adults and families to enjoy the park. 

£175,000 of funding to create this new play area came from the Local Development Programme managed by the council's Community Partnership Team. The design of the play area was informed though design workshops delivered by the local Community Partnership Officer with children from both schools. This involved a competition to design a sign for the park. These children did such a great job ensuring that the artwork reflects the theme of the play area, and we are sure the children and young people of Newmains will enjoy the use of this facility for many years to come.
