The Newmains Welcome Wall was completed in January 2025, having been constructed to incorporate reclaimed stone from the original Newmains Primary School, to create a heritage feature welcome wall for the community of Newmains. The second phase now completes the project, displaying a Locomotive Wheel plaque based on a bespoke design created for the Newmains Welcome wall. This design was developed following consultation with and input from the Newmains Community Action Group, and representatives of the Newmains & District Community Council, to ensure the design reflects the history and heritage of Newmains.
The design brief discussed with the group from the outset, involved a display to reflect the heavy engineering industrial past at Newmains, where Coltness Iron Works was based, and to recognise how this played a large part in shaping this community. The wheel showing the upper half circle as a railway wheel, detailed with raised lettering with the wording Newmains, the lower section is a locomotive wheel.
This design has also been adopted as the logo for the Newmains Community groups and will form a symbol of Newmains on future signage discussed and proposed by the Community Groups. This project was developed through the Local Development Programme supported by the Community Partnership Team. This projects links to the Community Engagement Priority by directly involving the engagement of the community of Newmains to create and develop the plaque.
The plaque was unveiled with the support of the community groups, local school children, Newmains Community Trust and Elected Members.
