Poverty Initiatives

North Lanarkshire Council and NHS Lanarkshire together with our partners in local voluntary and community organisations are committed to tackling poverty. 

On this page, you will find information on current initiatives to help you access welfare services and other money-saving tips and incentives.

Fuel Poverty

We know that fuel poverty is an issue for many people and during the winter, it's more important than ever to keep fuel costs down. If you are concerned about your energy costs then help is available. You can call Home Energy Scotland free of charge on 0808 808 2282 or email at adviceteam@sc.homeenergyscotland.orgOur Tackling Poverty Team can also offer practical help and advice to households experiencing fuel poverty.

Universal Credit

The £20 reduction in Universal Credit may affect your ability to meet bills and debts. If you would like your benefits checked or help with debts and budgeting you can email the TPteam@northlan.gov.uk or contact your local CAB.

Employment

North Lanarkshire’s Working can help you get into work, increase your hours or support you if you are facing redundancy or have been made redundant.

Our Supported Employment Service also provides real support through our experienced job coaches to disabled people and those facing challenging barriers to find the right job. 

Our employability support can provide the training you need, help with childcare and will be there even after you go into work. Sign up online or call 0800 0730 226.

Immigration Advice

If you are a North Lanarkshire resident and need information or advice about your immigration status you can access free legal advice from the Ethnic Minority Law Centre – call 0141 204 2888.

End of furlough

Furlough ended on 30 September 2021. If your employment conditions have changed (for instance, you are now unemployed or you have reduced hours or increased hours) and you would like a benefit check carried out, call the Financial Inclusion Team on 01698 332551 or email FIT@northlan.gov.uk or contact your local CAB.

Leisure memberships

The Active 65 membership for the over 65s offers unlimited access to our leisure facilities including gyms, fitness classes, swimming, health suites. And better yet - it is only £50 for the entire year. You can sign up online or call our membership team on 01236 341969.

For younger people aged 11 to 15, you can sign up for the Active Teen membership which will allow you free gym access until 31 March 2022.
